June 2016 Newsletter

Annwyl Aelod/Dear Member

Here’s an update on recent & future happenings in Clwb Dringo.

Meets List for the next few months

The Meets are the life of the Club and we do have something for everybody – low level interesting coastal walks, high mountain days out, some fun evening strolls followed by supper and even the occasional rock-climbing meet! If you can’t be a ‘regular’, choose something from the list and become an ‘occasional’!  Good company and conversation guaranteed.

There will be a Clwb Dringo Porthmadog  trip to Pembrokeshire from Tues 27th to Thurs 29th of September.   There is good walking and cycling in the Mynydd Preseli area and there is the opportunity to visit the place where the "sarsen" of Stonehenge were quarried thousands of years ago.

Accommodation has been reserved in Fishguard at "James John Hamilton House" [http://www.jamesjohnhamilton.co.uk/] which will sleep up to 10 people at a cost of approximately £25pp per night. We have reserved all the places for TWO nights (27th & 28th). Fishguard is 5 or 6 miles from Mynydd Preseli.  It is self-catering, but there are many pubs & cafés in Fishguard (which looks like an interesting place).

IMPORTANT: Our reservation is good up to 15th August so we MUST know whether you can come before then, with a £10 pp deposit before we confirm with JJHH please.

ALSO IMPORTANT:  As accommodation is limited in JJH House we will book people in as they contact us - first come, first booked. But don't worry, if we get more interest - and I hope we do - then next door is Hamilton Lodge/Backpackers which can accommodate another 8 people.

Details of walks etc. will be sorted out before we go!

Rob will be continuing his excellent service of sending out a reminder email, including a brief ‘classification’ of each walk, shortly before each Meet. Unless otherwise specified, each Meet will start at 9.30am in Heol y Parc.

Looking ahead….    [which makes me feel that summer is over already…]

Nosweithiau Cymdeithasol / Social Evenings on the last Friday in Autumn/Winter months

28th October          Aneurin Phillips Rhan 1 / Part 1 : Uchel ac Isel (Chile, Bolivia, Peru a Norwy

Rhan 2 / Part 2 : Nepal ac Alaska (Eirth Brown / Bears)

Mid-Wales Meet – May 2016

The 2 nights stay at Rhaeadr Gwy on May 17th – 19th was deemed a resounding success with a turnout of 14 members. Attendees had a choice of walking / cycling activities. We only saw John Parry & Iolyn Jones in the pub in the evening…they spent the daytime busy training for their imminent waltz down the Danube.  Pob lŵc!!

We non-cyclists were introduced to the Nuttalls – not the people, the hills. A slippery, if somewhat boggy, slope, you might think. See: http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/Nuttalls.php

I think we did six over the three days….that only leaves 183 in Wales to go!

Thanks to John Williams and John Parry for organising the trip.

Next trip??

Committee members have discussed the possibility of arranging a similar break, possibly in the

Preselli Area of Pembrokeshire. September 27th – 29th was suggested. Cathy and David have investigated and found some potential accommodation places – details will follow by email.

This is a part of Cymru that many of us don’t know very well – why not come along to explore?  I don’t think there are any Nuttalls there, but there’s bound to be a list of something for compulsive tickers.  Apart from anything else you might get to see where the “sarsens” of Stone Henge came from – who knew that Stone Henge is really Welsh??

A Big Day for the Chairman

It is hard to believe, but our Chairman Dewi Hudson Jones has his 80th birthday next week!! He is avoiding the popular press and paparazzi by hiding on a remote Greek island until the date has passed, but he will be leading a “Birthday Walk” for CDP on 3rd July.

Be there or be square! As they used to say in Dewi’s day.
